Driver Licences Eye Test
Driver Licence Eye Test & DL12 Certificates
Whether you are renewing your driver licence, hitting the road for the first time, or applying for a professional endorsement, our optometrists provide NZTA-compliant vision assessments to help you get your licence sorted quickly and correctly.

We offer two levels of vision assessment to ensure you meet the legal requirements for your specific licence class:

1. Driver Licence Screening Test | $40
-
Best for:
-
Standard Class 1 (Car) and 6 (Motorbike) renewals for healthy individuals or existing patients.
-
-
What to expect:
-
A brief, efficient check of your visual acuity (sharpness) and peripheral vision.
-
-
Important Note:
-
This is a "pass/fail" screening. If you do not meet the NZTA standard during this check, a Comprehensive Driver Eye Test will be required (our friendly staff will help you to arrange another time for this as it requires longer appointment time). This allows our optometrist to investigate why the standard wasn’t met and determine if glasses or other solutions can get you back on the road safely.
-

2. Comprehensive Driver Eye Test | $85
-
Best for:
-
First time drivers.
-
Class 2-5
-
All endorsements
-
Existing or previous health conditions (e.g., Stroke, Glaucoma, Double Vision, or Monocular Vision)
-
New patients who haven't had a full eye exam in the last two years.
-
-
What to expect:
-
A full clinical examination (our comprehensive eye test plus a specialised peripheral vision test) to meet all the legal requirements for our optometrist to complete the the DL12 Medical Certificate.
-
-
The Benefit:
-
This is a deep dive into your eye health. It ensures that any complex requirements are addressed in one go, providing a robust medical report for the NZTA.
-

Not sure which one to book?
If you haven't had a full eye exam in the last two years, have an existing eye condition, have recently noticed a change in your vision, or are applying for a vocational licence, we highly recommend the Comprehensive Driver Eye Test. It’s the best way to ensure all your paperwork is completed in a single visit, avoiding the need for follow-up appointments.

Pro Tip: We can incorporate a driver vision check into your routine Comprehensive Eye Examination at no additional charge! Just let us know when booking to save yourself a trip to the licensing agency. The DL12 certificate is only valid for 60 days.

Why the distinction?
For commercial drivers or those with medical conditions, the NZ Transport Agency requires a more rigorous assessment of your Visual Field (your peripheral "side" vision). This requires specialized equipment and a more in-depth review by the Optometrist to certify that you are safe on the road.

Important Checklist for Your Appointment:
-
Bring your current licence (or alternative photo ID).
-
Bring all glasses or contact lenses you currently use for driving.
-
Know your medications: Some medications can affect your vision and are relevant to the assessment.
